During the second expedition of MOm’s research team in the monk seal shelters in Gyaros, a total of six individuals were recorded, four of which were born during the current pupping period. Thus in these first two expeditions conducted by MOm, five pups have been recorded up to date, an important result! Monk seal pups moult, over the first weeks of their life, shedding their natal pelage (lanugo), thus enabling MOm’s researchers to identify the age of the pups, and accurately proceed in exact pup counts. Furthermore, every monk seal pup has a ventral unique white patch, which allows MOm’s biologists to identify the sex of the pup.
