A training seminar for the local government officials of Andros and Syros with the title “Protected Areas: Legal Framework, Protection, Management” took place on the 2nd and 3rd of March in Syros and Andros respectively. The speakers were Ms. Elina Samara, member of the WWF Greece CYCLADES LIFE field team who explained the goals and the vision of the CYCLADES LIFE program for the creation of a marine protected area around Gyaros, Ms. Ioli Christopoulou, Biodiversity Policy Officer for WWF Greece who presented examples of protected areas in Greece and Ms. Eleftheria Mavromati, special scientist for the Greek Ombudsman who covered the different levels of legal protection (international, European and national) in relation to protected areas, presented the management tools of Protected Areas, spoke of the role of local societies for the protection of the peripheral ecosystems and explained the role of the Greek Ombudsman to the protection of the environment.
