First underwater cleanup in Gyaros

On Sunday the 24th of May, the WWF CYCLADES LIFE field team together with volunteers dived at the deep blue waters of Gyaros. The reason? to remove from the sea bottom, the so called “ghost fishing”, nets that have been abandoned at sea and usually get stuck or just lie there at the bottom of the sea. Fully equiped with neopren diving suits, the necessary equipment and lots of patience, the team dived at specific spots and removed the nets, placed them on board the inflatables and carried them ashore to be dispensed accordingly. These ….net ghosts, consist one of the deadliest threat especially for Mediterranean Monk seal pups.
