During the previous week, the CYCLADES LIFE field team with the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) completed an expedition to Gyaros island in order to study the population of the rare seabird, the Yelkouan Shearwater. The two field teams paired up to check last year’s nests and, despite their difficult location they observed high predation signs by rats. By the method of telemetry they attempted to study the foraging fields and their distance from the nests during the reproductive period. The researchers, via the use of GPS transmitters, a technically challenging method, hope to collect data that will add information on which are the important foraging habitats of the species in order to include them to the future management and protection measures of the marine area around Gyaros.
