After a series of diving expeditions, the field team of CYCLADES Life has just completed the delimitation of the first underwater trail that will be designated in Gyaros. This particular trail has been chosen because of its interesting geomorphological features and of the rich diversity of organisms encountered in the area. This trail also highlights the unique history of Gyaros since it is placed on a reef that is part of the natural extension of the peninsula where the historic prisons are located. The goal is to offer visitors a unique underwater experience within the limits of these trails, to inform them on the local marine fauna and flora and to let them see the stunning view of the prison building. The next step, after the delimitation of the shallow underwater trail (snorkeling), is to develop a proposed path that will underline the beauty of this reef for the interested scuba divers. The studies continue in Gyaros and Syros having as a main goal to create a small network of underwater trails and paths that will “connect” these 2 islands.
